Rich Miner, a co-founder of Android based in Cambridge, is stepping down from his role as general partner at GV, Alphabet's venture capital arm that was formerly known as Google Ventures, Fortune's Dan Primack reported Thursday morning."This vision is another big idea, but it will take time."[/pullquote] While Miner will retain a board seat on some of his portfolio companies, he said his main plan is start a new education tech project within Google. Miner will remain in Cambridge for the new gig, though a majority of his team will be at Google's Mountain View headquarters. The idea for Miner's new ed-tech project seems to have arose from a lack of educational apps and other internet services for kids that didn't primarily serve as babysitters and ad delivery services, as Primack said he and Miner discussed earlier this year. After successfully pitching Alphabet CEO Larry Page and Google CEO Sundar Pichai, the new project will be formed within Google and not its parent company Alphabet because of the search giant's existing education assets."I don’t actually know exactly what we’re building yet," Miner told Primack. "Just like Android took us our years to get the first device out and I helped create WildFire 25 years ago as a voice-based personal assistant, which is just now starting to happen. This vision is another big idea, but it will take time." GV will continue to have investors based in Cambridge, though they are primarily focused on the life sciences. Photo source. Correction: The article has been updated to reflect that Rich Miner's new project is not a new company within Google.
